A proposal is before the Barnstable County Assembly of Delegates that would eliminate the County Board of Regional Commissioners (the “County Commissioners”). This proposal is part of the Assembly’s county charter review process. Every five years the Assembly evaluates the county charter, passed by the State Legislature in 1988, to determine if it continues to function effectively and meet the needs of county residents.
The proposal to eliminate the county commissioners would replace them with a “strong county administrator” and would transfer policy-making duties to the Assembly. It would also give the Assembly authority to hire the county administrator (under the charter now, the commissioners hire the administrator).
The public is invited to express their views on this proposal through any of these:
- Speak at a public hearing at the Assembly of Delegates' Oct. 16, 2019 meeting at 4:30pm; Eastwing Conference Center (the old jail house), Barnstable County Complex, 3195 Main St., Barnstable, MA.
