Brewster’s Dept. of Natural Resources has teamed up with the Brewster Fish House to take used shellfish shells from the restaurant and put them back into Cape Cod Bay to create habitat for new oysters to grow on.
This model has been around for a long time, but the program is fairly new in Brewster. The Dept. picks up shell from the Fish House, stores it for at least a year, bags it in lobster bait bags, and places them in areas in Town to help promote oysters to grow on the shell’s surface. The Dept. also collects in front of their office to help reduce the amount headed to the transfer station.
