Library Volunteers

The Brewster Ladies’ Library relies on the talents of our many wonderful volunteers who are invaluable assets to BLL’s smooth functioning. Some volunteers work occasionally while other commit to a weekly time slot. Each volunteer is trained and matched with a job suitable to their skills, interests and availability.

Council On Aging Volunteers

Interested volunteer candidates should complete the COA Volunteer Application.

ADOPT-A-ROOM:  We are looking for people to be responsible for one room here at the COA.  This would include a cleaning twice a year, periodic cleaning and polishing of wood, trim, etc.  Budget restraints are such that we cannot allocate personnel to do this type of cleaning and we want to keep the building in the best shape possible.

DRIVERS:  Do you enjoy driving and meeting new people? Please consider joining our group of volunteers, helping our seniors get to medical appointments. Most requests are local, flexible, and rewarding. Stop by the senior center at 1673 Main St. to fill out a simple application or call us at 508-896-2737.

FUNDRAISING:  Assist in the development of fund raising projects at various times during the year.

GRANT WRITING:  We are looking for someone willing to research and apply for the many grants available for Senior Centers.

HOLIDAY DECORATING:  Volunteers are needed to help here at the Council on Aging to decorate our Main Room for various holidays.  Decorations are provided; we only need the manpower to actually do the decorating.

KITCHEN CREW:  Beginning around 9:00am, the Kitchen Crew helps put together the bread and desserts in order to pack the meals in the coolers to be delivered to our homebound seniors.  There are three routes here in Brewster.  Next, starting about 10am, the food for Senior Dining starts to be heated and the Dining room is set up for lunch at 11:45AM Monday through Friday.  After lunch, the Crew helps with dishes and clean up.

LIBRARY MAINTENANCE:  We offer a “free” library here at the Senior Center. Help is needed to maintain the Library in good order to make it easier for those who wish to borrow a good book. This would only need to be done once a month (possibly more frequently in the summer months as people tend to borrow more books then). Contact us at 508-896-2737 if you are interested in helping with this.

MEDICAL APPOINTMENT DRIVERS:  If you enjoy driving, come in and sign up to be a Volunteer Medical Driver. You will be using your personal car. Medical appointments can be as far as Hyannis, but you can indicate how far you are willing to drive. Your ride to a medical appointment will include your attention to helping the senior into your car and delivering them to their doctor’s appointment. Sometimes you might be asked to stop at the pharmacy on the way home to pick up a prescription. It is an on-call basis, so you drive when it works with your schedule. Stop into the COA for more information.

MEDICAL EQUIPMENT SHED MAINTENANCE:  Our medical shed can be a very busy place.  People are constantly taking and returning equipment.  We also get many donations from people who do not need this type of equipment anymore.  Generally, the medical shed needs to be “Cleaned Out” on a monthly basis.  Someone needs to check the equipment to make sure that it is in perfect working condition.  The equipment is also placed in a way that will make it easy for our clients to safely find what they are looking for.

MEALS ON WHEELS DRIVERS:  Meals on Wheels Drivers arrive about 9:45am and leave the building around 10am to go out and deliver the meals on their route.  New drivers, along with the Kitchen Crew, are always trained and assisted until they feel comfortable to be on their own.  Meals on Wheels Drivers are reimbursed partially for their mileage.

NEWSLETTER ASSEMBLY:  This is a monthly opportunity to help label, fold and tape the newsletters in preparation for mailing them out to our clients.

OFFICE WORK:  Volunteers are needed periodically to help answer phones, make appointments and various other simple office tasks.

PUBLICITY:  Help get the word out about all the programs that are happening here at your COA.  We need someone willing to work on getting newspaper coverage of some of the special things as well as the ordinary day-to-day happenings.

SENIOR CITIZEN REAL ESTATE TAX ABATEMENT PROGRAM:  This program will provide our Brewster citizens age 60 and older the opportunity to abate their annual property tax bill by $500. (to be credited to upcoming bills received within the fiscal year following when the volunteer service is provided), by performing a minimum of 45.5 hours of approved service per fiscal year (July 1st – June 30th) for the Town of Brewster.  This program recognizes that many of our seniors can provide a wealth of knowledge and skills from which the Town could benefit in its various departmental needs.  Stop into the COA for financial guidelines and application packet.
