Community Policing

Coffee with a Cop

The Brewster Police Department’s motto is “In partnership with our community.”  That motto is also built into our department mission statement.  We recognize that police departments gain their legitimacy from the support of the people they serve.  To continue fostering the relationship between the department and the community, the Brewster Police Department participates in several community policing initiatives. We offer programs like our Youth Academy, Citizens Police Academy, Senior Reassurance Program, Coffee with a Cop, High School Internship Program, and Holiday Stuff-A-Cruiser/Toys-for-Tots.

Youth Academy:

Local youth spend a week of their summer learning about police operations.  They begin their week with a tour of the police station and look inside a police cruiser.  With different guest speakers and topics each day, they finish the week with a better understanding of how the Police Department serves the community.

Citizens Police Academy:

One evening a week for eight weeks, attendees get to learn about their Police Department.  From animal control and computer crimes to drug investigations and a mock trial, participants get to take a deep dive into the wide variety of services the Police Department provides.  Watch our website and Facebook page for upcoming dates.

Senior Reassurance Program:

This daily call-in program allows participants and their family members to have peace of mind knowing that they have a connection with their local Police Department.  This voluntary program allows participants to call us each morning to check in.  If we don’t hear from them and we cannot make contact via phone, a cruiser is dispatched to their residence to check on their wellbeing.

Coffee with a Cop:

To help break down barriers, our officers engage with the public in a more relaxed setting where they are able to converse and answer questions or just enjoy a cup of coffee together.

High School Internship Program:

The Police Department has hosted students from both Nauset and Monomoy Regional School Districts as interns within the department.  This opportunity allows students who are considering a policing career to get some insight into how we serve our community.

Holiday Stuff-A-Cruiser/Toys-for-Tots:

Working with local businesses and residents alike, to assure that every child has a bright and merry holiday season, the Police Department gets festive during the holidays to help collect toys and other donations.  All donations go to local families who may need a helping hand during the holidays.
