Fire Prevention Officer
The Brewster Fire Prevention Officer is required by law to enforce the provisions of 527 CMR 1.00 (Massachusetts amendments to NFPA 1); the laws contained in Massachusetts General Laws Chapter 148, the State Building Code; 780 CMR; and the bylaws of the Town of Brewster.
The Fire Prevention Officer works a Monday through Thursday 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. schedule. Daily responsibilities include conducting annual commercial fire inspections, liquor license inspections, home smoke detector resale inspections, new construction alarm inspections, plan review, oil tank inspections, quarterly inspections of all nursing and assisted living facilities, re-inspections, complaint follow-up, and fire investigations. The individual is also responsible for scheduling and presenting Fire Safety education programs in the schools, nursing homes, and at community events as requested and is included in the department’s daily staffing level requiring the inspector to be available to respond to emergencies.
The Fire Prevention Bureau generated $24,100.00 in permit inspection fees in fiscal year 2023. These included home resale inspections, tank permits, alarm install inspections, burn permit sales and other miscellaneous fees. The collected income is transferred into the Towns general fund. The following breakdown identifies the various inspections completed and permits processed by the fire prevention bureau during calendar year 2022. These inspections and permits resulted in a total of 1243 individual customer contacts.
