Stony Brook Mill Site Retaining Wall and Fish Passage Improvements
The Stony Brook Grist Mill and Museum is located at 830 Stony Brook Road. The Grist Mill and surrounding property are owned by the Town of Brewster and are overseen by the Mill Sites Committee. The site dates back to the 1600s and has great historical significance. The Stony Brook Mill site is divided east and west by Stony Brook - the “Herring Run” - and into north and south sections by Stony Brook Road.
The retaining wall supporting the headrace pond is failing and is in danger of collapse. Some of the base stones are displaced, and sections of the wall need to be reconstructed. The wall forms the western side of the fish run. The Town plans to re-use existing stones on a concrete footing to ensure it retains its historic appearance, similar to the dam reconstruction completed in 2013.  Several other spot repairs will be completed, including at the overflow pipe in the seining pool.
The Stony Brook fishway extends north of Stony Brook road for approximately 300 feet.  This section contains 10 weirs and corresponding pools that vary in size and depth.  The original design is not optimal for the migrating herring and the weirs are in poor condition.  The Town will reconstruct existing weirs and add several new weirs to minimize the elevation change between pools and facilitate easier passage as part of these improvements.
This information session will present the plans for the project and answer questions.
