Climate Emergency and Net Zero Declaration

The Town of Brewster recognizes that the climate emergency - driven by human activity including fossil fuel consumption and land use practices leading to global warming, rising seas, deadly storms, dangerous heat waves, acidifying oceans, and melting ice sheets - poses a threat to the health, safety, and economic security of our residents, especially our children and future generations, and to our natural resources.

The Town of Brewster therefore has adopted the following policy objectives:

  1. Reduce net greenhouse gas emissions from human activity within and by the Town to zero at the earliest technically and economically feasible time, and
  2. Reduce the Town's vulnerability to climate change.

Further, the Select Board and Town Administration are integrating these priorities into their strategic planning efforts, directing all Town officers and departments to take such measures within the scope of their respective responsibilities and authority as may be necessary and prudent to facilitate such policy objectives, and actively engaging the community in moving these initiatives forward.
