Ice Safety on Beaches
Extreme Caution Advised
Posted on: February 18, 2026 - 4:15pm
After the tragic incident in Eastham over the weekend, we want to make sure residents and visitors take extreme care around the ice on our ponds and beaches.
Some ponds have areas of thicker ice, but there are areas where open water is visible. Please take precautions and no ice is ever considered “safe”.
For our beaches, salt water freezes unevenly and at a lower temperature than fresh water and snow. With our large tide range the ice is not continuous and is very unstable. Sea ice could give way at any time. We recommend that no one go out onto the ice on the bay or salt marshes, particularly as it is thawing.
